I picked a Iphone 4 for the topic Commodity Fetishism because it represnts something that almost everyone wants or has. It's in popular demand since the 1st generation hit the stores in 2007. I personally had an Iphone until I broke two months ago. It was very addictive considering all the cool apps I had, so then it became my fetish. It's a phone and Ipod all in one, what more could I had asked for. My only concern was the devices inside the phone that made it operate. At any given moment the screen would cut off, the phone would freeze up and it was quickly prone to the mist of water which caused water damaged. So, I believe cheap labor went into making the device and yet everyone wants one and it willing to pay $499 for it.
When I begin to think about Commodity Fetishism my thoughts tend to wonder off to statuses rather then material things. Its understandable that people want what others have like the best car or the IPhone. Everyone wants to be the best by having the latest technology but rather then just looking at the idea of Commodity Fetishism as wanting materialistic things I see it more as wanting the same economic status as others. Materialistic things are easily broken while economic statuses are more dramatic and have a more of an impact on others. But when it comes to the idea of the IPhone and how many want due to it's label to me it shows how people need that label even if the quality is bad. It's sad how labels and materialistic things are what pretty much run this world, and that needs to change.
ReplyDeleteYou picking the Iphone as commodity fethchism is a very strong choice. I could not even make something up to disagree with you. Other cell phone companies make decent pitches for their own products, but like you say EVERYONE would rather have and IPhone. I myself have a Droid. There is a huge IPhone vs. Droid battle. Which is better. Im not sure. I have a droid because I can afford it. But I hate it.
ReplyDeleteThe iphone is a great pick for fethchism. The iphone seems to be the phone that almost everybody wants to have. Some people say that it is the best phone out there and other say that you are just paying for the name? Either way the iphone is a very popular item that is out on the market.
